Throwback Thursday: Article written on 3/25/22
In the year 2009, I attended a school trip with my kindergarten class to a local pizzeria, Jimmy Max Pizza. My 6-year-old self was in awe as I learned about the history of the Margherita pizza. The vibrant green basil, electric red tomato sauce, and brilliant white mozzarella, all harmoniously coexisting on a thin crust. The ingredients represent the colors of the Italian flag, in honor of Queen Margherita. We all received a ball of dough to bring home and I couldn't wait to make my very own Margherita pizza. My rendition was not perfect, most likely oblong in shape; however, I had an immeasurable amount of fun and got together with my family in the kitchen. Sure, the crust was probably uneven, but it's the thought that counts.
Fast forward almost 15 years and I have returned to Jimmy Max for yet another Pizza Seminar. I am taking a class called “Discover New York'' where we learn about the extraordinary people who make our city special; where better to start than a local Staten Island business owner who uses pizza to bring together the community. James McBratney, better known as Jimmy, first opened his restaurant along with his grandfather in 1989. We listened to his life story and motivational words, all while enjoying delicious cheese pizza. I would like to thank Jimmy for providing lunch for us all! The experience opened my eyes to how business and community service can blend together. James said something along the lines of, “whatever you do in life, do it with all of your heart”. This mindset is what separates a job from a lifelong passion that gives your life purpose. If you only focus on the monetary aspect of work, you will never succeed. Jimmy also taught us a valuable life lesson: in order to receive, you must first learn to give to others.
In addition to myself, hundreds of other kindergarten classes have attended trips to Jimmy Max. What started as a fun way to advertise, grew into a staple for his restaurant experience. Schools all across Staten Island would flood his restaurant, filling the room with laughter and making memories every child would carry with them forever. In addition to Pizza Seminars, James frequently supports local charities and raises money for his parish. I wanted to share my experience with you all because whenever I see someone bringing a little light into the world, I want others to hear about it too. I was inspired by James’ generosity and hope everyone reading will feel the same. That's why I'm challenging all of my readers to do one act of kindness this weekend. Pay for the person behind you at Starbucks, compliment someone's outfit, or even tip your waiter or waitress a little bit extra; a tiny fragment of gratitude goes further than you may think.
