Dressing as Different Majors for a Week

Whether or not we want to admit it, each major contains age-old stereotypes. Some of them may be true, others may be a far stretch from the truth. For instance, not every business major’s favorite movie is The Wolf of Wallstreet and not every teaching major has perfect bulletin-board handwriting. Nonetheless, what you choose to study says a lot about your interests and skills. This week, I decided to highlight the best qualities of different college majors in the best way I know how: fashion.

1. Art Major

Art majors define individuality. You get to explore different mediums, create pieces no one has seen before, and express yourself on a canvas. I decided to wear my favorite pair of rainbow overalls, paired with a darling pastel green cardigan. Throw on some comfy converse sneakers, and you got yourself a practical outfit to wear during a long day of sculpting or painting. People who study art are creative and free-spirited, so feel free to experiment with bright colors and unique styles. Also, if you drip paint on rainbow overalls, no worries! It will only enhance the look. To complete the ensemble, I made myself a green smoothie to match my cardigan (also, art majors seem like the healthy “woke” type of individual).

2. Business Major

For the business field, networking is key. You want to make sure you always look your best because you never know whom you may run into. You are always planning your next big idea worthy of a Shark Tank pitch, and often find yourself five steps ahead. Worry not business majors, with hard work and determination, you will accomplish all of your dreams in life because you are undeniably ambitious. Opt for pieces that empower you and motivate you to get through the day in style. With loafers and a black blazer, everyone will know you mean business.

3. English Major

I’m an English major and I admit that some stereotypes regarding my major are oftentimes true. First off, I wear cardigans on an everyday basis. Second, I own reading glasses because I read a lot. Third, Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play of all time, so I needed to get a spooky shirt with a quote on it. Fourth, I’m currently taking two English classes (back-to-back) so it isn't uncommon for me to carry two bags because books are heavy. English majors talk about books even outside of the classroom because when you fall down the literary theme rabbit hole, there is no way out. Contrary to stereotypes, English majors thrive in group settings because ideas are meant to be shared and discussed with fellow book lovers. We aren't all pretentious, I promise. The English major appreciates the simple pleasures in life, even if it's just a nerdy t-shirt or a clever rhyme scheme.

4. Teaching Major

The teaching major, dare I say, contains the most power out of all the majors on this list. However, with great power comes great responsibility. The future generation lies in your hands. Many students spend more time in the classroom than with their own families, so it’s clear that you have a massive impact on the lives of children. You aren’t just an educator, but a stand-out role model, a confidant, and most importantly, a voice of encouragement for students who lack support in their home life. The teaching major has a drawer filled to the brim with inspirational t-shirts because you always want to inspire those around you. Don’t forget your denim jacket (because it pairs well with any outfit), and shoes that can withstand a whole day of being on your feet.

5. Law Major

You cannot be a law major without watching Legally Blonde. Therefore, the law major’s outfit should pay homage to the queen herself: Elle Woods. A pink power suit will allow you to slay your in-class oral arguments, all while conjuring the confidence of the famous beloved blonde character. You're going to need a lot of coffee to get through hours of reading and studying, so make sure you get a cute reusable cup to complete the look. Don’t forget a sleek leather portfolio; you want to show the world that you're professional and put together. When in doubt, wear an outfit that will boost your confidence because Elle Woods once said, “you must always have faith in yourself”.

Honorable Mention:

  • Computer Science Major

Comp sci majors are busy learning programming languages, so they often wear comfortable and practical outfits. They may be breaking ground in the tech world, but they're also breaking every fashion rule by wearing crocs with socks. The chill and intelligent comp sci major is never seen without a laptop, and will always leave you intrigued with their creative and innovative ideas.
