Home Is Wherever I'm With You

From: 11/19/2021

As the end of November comes around, reminiscent feelings from Thanksgivings of the past begin to emerge. Some people gather on the couch to watch good old American football, and some have their annual touch football game out in the yard (just like Monica and Ross from Friends). Many of us watch the Thanksgiving parade or watch the Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving Special. For me, Thanksgiving is just about being around those who I love most. The first Thanksgiving was held in the year 1621. We may not grow our own vegetables or hunt down our own turkeys; but just as the pilgrims did, we gather together as a community and give thanks for all of the blessings we have in our lives.

After the wild few years we have all experienced, some of us may have loved ones who are no longer with us. Celebrating a holiday that revolves around family is bittersweet when there are a few seats at the table that are going to be left empty. Someone must be chopping onions right now, I swear. If there is anyone out there who is also going through this for the holidays, just know, we will all get through this together. As I was looking back at old pictures and videos from past Thanksgiving, I couldn't help but laugh. Everyone in my family only has only one volume for speaking and it is borderline yelling. However, all of the noises that come with the holiday are music to my ears. Pots and pans slamming on the metal stove, the T.V roaring in the background, my family conversing at max volume, my cousins running up and down the steps trying to prepare for dinner. All of this noise reminds me that I will never be alone because I will always have my family right by my side.

I guess I'll start my “what are you thankful for” dinner speech a little early this year. I’m thankful for all of my loved ones who are now in a better place. I’m thankful for my whole family who fill my life with moments that make it one worth living. I’m thankful for all of my professors who teach me about the world and my friends for encouraging me to always grow. You guys are all incredible and I couldn't ask for better people to be surrounded by. This year, I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and appreciate all of the good in your life. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
